Abstract

This paper explores Luther’s theory of natural law as given at beginning of God’s creation and argues that natural law and Christian law can be the basis of social ethics in secular society. In addition, the paper insists that the essential character of Luther’s natural law can be grasped when it is connected with the structure of his theory of the two kingdoms. For Luther, natural law itself is good and true. The natural law is given by God into the human mind and it contains the basic rule that all humans need in their social and ethical conduct. Luther does not distinguish between the natural and the divine. In addition, the written law of the Bible and the natural law do not differ greatly in terms of content. It is virtually the same law. The purpose of these laws is to fulfill the actions of love. The natural law applies to both Christians and non-Christians. Luther says that the natural law of reason reflects God’s will and plan. But the fall of man has darkened and obscured the primal meaning of natural law. Now, human’s knowledge is no longer able to correctly read the principles of natural law written in our hearts from the beginning of creation. Therefore, spiritual and secular government, governed by natural law, must remind us of the entire content of the natural law, which is nothing else than the commandment of love. When spiritual government teaches and preaches God’s word, the government reminds us of the natural law in our hearts. Also secular government impresses the law on our mind by making and enforcing positive laws through its authority and power. In that respect, spiritual government and secular government are complementary. While Luther does not distinguish natural law and Christian law, he adds one more thing to Christian ethics. That is the principle of enduring and suffering. Thus only Christians truly fulfill the law of love. At this point, Christian law is beyond the realm of natural law in secular society. The primal spirit of natural law is completed and accomplished through the law of altruistic love for others. Luther’s position on natural law provided a new paradigm for the formation of modern legal thinking. The transfer of the areas of marriage, family, property, and education to the realm of secular government largely depended on Luther’s understanding of the three estates. Luther’s discourse on the two kingdoms and natural law extends beyond the realm of religion to the public realm, such as the reform of law and social institutions. In this respect, Luther’s theory of natural law needs to be considered as a precious example.
