Abstract

This article accesses the trends in democratization in Sub-Saharan African countries for last 25 years. In order to do this, it focuses on four different dimensions: illegitimate military intervention, multi-party elections, the institutionalization of separate powers, and the institutionalization of political parties. The results draw a picture of complexity and of contradictory trends. While we observe positive development of young democracies, the current situations do not meet the expectation. As multi-party elections are regularly held, African citizens require high levels of vertical accountability and representation from the political elites. Due to the lack of power turnover, people who have been continuously marginalized raise a question about the democratic legitimacy of the new democracy. Without economic condition improvement, ordinary Africans are not fully satisfied with how democracy works in their country.
