Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze trends in the domestic restaurant franchise market and the current status and issues of the restaurant franchise system based on franchise industry statistics derived from disclosure documents. By examining franchise-related statistics produced domestically, we utilized data from the Maxcess Franchise Industry Statistics Report for four years(2018 - 2021). The analysis revealed that despite the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis, the domestic restaurant franchise industry continues to show continuous growth. However, while the number of companies and brands in the industry is high, the total revenue and sales per store are relatively small compared to other sectors, with a significant proportion dominated by small business franchisees. Although there is a large number of franchisors, the majority have fewer than 100 franchisees, with a substantial portion of them being small-scale operations. Additionally, the average number of company-owned stores is 1.1, indicating a high closure rate and a prevalence of companies entering the franchise business without prior experience in operating directly owned stores. Furthermore, the average survival years for companies and brands are short, suggesting a vulnerable overall health of the franchise industry. To strengthen the competitiveness of the restaurant franchise industry, the production and processing of statistical data that accurately reflect the overall situation of the industry is essential, requiring improvements in the disclosure document system. Moreover, to establish a competitive franchise industry ecosystem based on mutual prosperity, there is a need for educational support policies to enhance the basic understanding of franchise systems and related laws among both prospective franchisors and franchisees, as well as policy support to facilitate the growth of small-scale franchises into mid-sized enterprises.
