Abstract

Conventional finance theories postulate perfect capital market, which implies that stock prices respond to information instantaneously. However, substantial researches show that stock price adjusts to information gradually and the speed of information diffusion varies across firms. In this paper, using the measure of stock price delay by Hou and Moskowitz(2005), we investigate the effect of financial opacity on the stock price delay. Firm-level financial opacity is proxied by the absolute value of discretionary accruals, three-year moving sum, and the standard deviation of them. Using the sample of Korean non-financial listed firms from 2003 through 2022, we find that firms with larger earnings managements, both for 1 and 3 year, are more likely to adjust to common information with longer delay. Moreover, using another measure of opacity, the standard deviation of discretionary accruals for three year, we demonstrate that volatility of earnings managements increase the stock price delay. These results are consistent with our hypothesis that financial opacity hinders timely price adjustment of information. These findings are robust to alternative statistical methodologies. We further examine whether these relations vary with the firm size. We find that the positive relation between corporate opacity and stock price delay is attenuated for firms with larger size. We can conclude that financial opaqueness can cause stock price delay but the relation is less pronounced for large firms.
