Abstract
Intangible assets is widely thought of as a key variable for value and productivity of firms, and economic growth. Clausen and Hirth(2016) suggest intangible intensity, which measures contribution of intangibles in production. In this research, we construct our main variables, intangible intensity, following Clausen and Hirth(2016). In literature, firms accumulate cash for the transaction motive or the agency motive. In this paper, we emphasize the transaction and precautionary motive and investigate the effect of intangible intensity on corporate cash holdings. Using the Korean firms data from 2002 to 2022, the results show that firms with higher intangible intensity tends to accumulate larger level of cash holdings. This implies that intangible-intense firms hold more cash for future investment but have more difficulties in outside financing. Our findings are robust to alternative methodologies and measures. Further we examine whether these relations vary in high-tech industry or KSE market. We find that the positive relation between intangible intensity and cash holdings is pronounced in firms in high-tech industry but is attenuated for firms in KSE market.
