Abstract

This study examined changes in student agency competencies and perceptions among university students who participated in role-based group activities within socially interactive liberal arts education settings. Repeated measures of student agency were conducted to identify patterns of change over time, and comparisons were made with a non-group activity class to provide empirical evidence of the effects of group-based learning. In addition, qualitative analysis was employed to explore changes in students’ perceptions of student agency resulting from their engagement in group activities. The findings of the study are as follows : First, both the group activity class and the non-group activity class showed statistically significant changes in student agency. However, the patterns of change differed across the three sub-domains. All students demonstrated improvement in goal achievement capacity, regardless of group activity participation. Notably, only the group activity class showed significant gains in responsible decision-making capacity, distinguishing them from their counterparts. No substantial changes were observed in proactive behavior capacity in either class. Second, students’ descriptions of agency-related behaviors during group activities were categorized into four thematic domains: initiative, communication, sincerity, and collaboration. These findings suggest that student agency, within the context of group work, involves actively engaging in dialogue, exchanging and negotiating ideas, participating with sincerity, and collaborating to achieve shared goals. Third, reflective statements collected after the completion of group activities revealed perceived growth in each domain of student agency. Students reported having developed responsible decision-making capacity through shared tasks, enhanced their goal achievement capacity through sustained and self-directed effort, and strengthened their proactive behavior capacity through successfully completing goal-oriented projects. This study provides meaningful empirical insights into how university students perceive and develop student agency within group activity-based classes. The results offer useful references for developing and applying instructional methods aimed at explicitly cultivating student agency in higher education.
