본 연구는 배재대학교 유아교육과 설립 70주년을 기념하여, 아펜젤러 부녀의 교육선교가 한국 유아교육의 제도화와 정체성 형성에 미친 영향을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구는 헨리 G.아펜젤러의 중앙교회⋅중앙유치원, 앨리스 아펜젤러의 이화보육학교, 그리고 클라라 하워드가 설립한 대전보육초급대학의 세 사례를 중심으로 전개하였다. 이를 위해 1차 사료, 선행연구, 교육기관 기록을 분석하고, 각 기관의 설립 배경⋅운영 구조⋅교육 철학⋅지역사회와의 관계를 역사적 맥락에서 해석하였다. 연구 결과, 헨리 아펜젤러의 기독교 전인교육 이념은 교회 기반 유아교육의 제도적⋅신앙적 토대를 마련하였으며, 앨리스 아펜젤러는 이를 유아교사 양성과 전문교육 체계로 발전시켰다. 클라라 하워드의 대전보육초급대학은 이화의 여성⋅유아교육 철학을 지역적 차원에서 실현하고, 배재학당의 건학이념을 유아교육 분야로 계승⋅토착화한 대표 사례였다. 특히 대전보육초급대학에서 현재 배재대학교 유아교육과에 이르는 70년의 역사는, 수도권 중심의 교육을 단순 이식한 것이 아니라 지역사회 요구와 역사적 상황 속에서 재구성된 배재 유아교육의 정체성 형성과정을 보여준다. 이러한 발견은 아펜젤러 부녀와 하워드 이후 전개된 교육선교의 흐름이, 오늘날 대전 지역 유아교육과 한국 유아교육 전반의 다양성과 지속성에 중요한 의미를 부여했음을 시사 한다. 본 연구는 한국 유아교육사에서 기독교 교육선교의 계보를 해석적으로 밝히고, 지역 교육사의 고유 가치와 향후 발전 방향을 모색하는 데 학문적 기여를 한다.
Abstract
This study examines the influence of the educational mission of Henry G. Appenzeller and his daughter Alice Appenzeller on the institutionalization and identity formation of early childhood education in Korea, marking the 70th anniversary of the Department of Early Childhood Education at Paichai University. Through three case studies—the Central Church and Central Kindergarten established under Henry G. Appenzeller, the Ewha Nursery School led by Alice Appenzeller, and the Daejeon Nursery Junior College founded by Clara Howard—this research analyzes historical records to reveal the development of institutional structures, educational philosophy, and community engagement. Findings show that Henry G. Appenzeller’s Christian philosophy of holistic education provided the spiritual and institutional foundation for church-based early childhood education. Alice Appenzeller advanced this legacy through professional teacher training, while Clara Howard’s Daejeon Nursery Junior College localized Paichai’s founding ideals, shaping the distinct identity of Paichai early childhood education. The 70-year continuity from Daejeon to the present illustrates a model of adaptation that integrates Paichai’s founding mission with evolving local educational needs. This study contributes to understanding the genealogy of Christian educational mission within Korean early childhood education and emphasizes the historical significance of preserving and developing the identity of Paichai early childhood education.
