본 논문은 파울러의 신앙발달이론을 클라라 하워드(Annie Clara Howard, 허길래/許吉來 1895-1995)의 선교사역에 적용하여 공공신학적 특징을 분석한다. 미국 남부의 감리교 가정에서 성장한 하워드는 동양 선교와 유아교육의 비전을가지고 한국 송도(개성)에서 처음 교육선교를 시작했다. 그녀는 이화여대 교수로활동하면서 유아교육의 전문성을 강화하였고, 6.25 전쟁 후에 1955년 대전에 유치원 교사를 양성하기 위한 대전보육초급대학을 설립함으로써 유아교육의 새로운지평을 열었다. 하워드는 감리교 교육선교사로서 한국문화를 존중하며 교파적 다양성을 포용하고 아동과 여성 그리고 가정의 복지를 개선하기 위하여 노력하였다. 특히, 아동교육과 부모교육의 유기적 결합과 기독교 가정생활운동의 중요성을 전파하며 한국전쟁으로 폐허가 된 한국인들에게 미래의 가능성과 소망을 선사하였다. 공공신학의 관점에서 바라볼 때 하워드의 선교사역은 교육의 현장과 사회의활동에서 신학의 공공성과 공동선을 추구했다는 점에서 20세기를 대표하는 “보편적 신앙”에 도달한 공공신학자라고 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
This article analyzes the public missionary works of Annie Clara Howard (1895-1995) from the perspective of Fowler’s faith development. Howard, who grew up in a Methodist family in the southern United States, first began educational missionary work in Songdo, Korea, with a vision of oriental missionary work and early childhood education. She strengthened her expertise in early childhood education while working as a professor at Ewha Womans University, and after the Korean War, she opened a new horizon for early childhood education by establishing Daejeon Child Care Primary University in 1955 to train kindergarten teachers. As a Methodist educational missionary, Howard respected Korean culture, embraced sectarian diversity, and tried to improve the welfare of children, women, and families. In particular, it spread the organic combination of child and parental education and the importance of the Christian family life movement, giving future possibilities and wishes to Koreans devastated by the Korean War. From the perspective of public theology, Howard’s missionary role can be evaluated as a public theologian presenting the 20th century in that he pursued the publicity and common good of theology in the field of education and social activities.
