Abstract
This paper empirically investigates the impact of the adoption of a range of digital technologies on firm’s total factor productivity. We divide the whole firms in 23 manufacturing industries into large firms and SMEs to examine the quantitatively substantial differences in the productivity effects of the adoption of digital technology across firm sizes. Using Survey of Business Activities provided by Statistics Korea, we show that there are large differences in the uptake of digital technologies among firms of different sizes. Large firms adopt, on average, digital tools far more than SMEs. We also find that the adoption of digital technologies has a positive and significant effect on firm productivity. This productivity effect of digital technology is significantly higher for large firms than that for SMEs. These results are robust to the alternative estimation method, i.e. propensity score matching technique.
