Abstract

Old Testament prophetical books start with the statement that conveys the information on prophet, historical context, object of the oracle, and so on. This statement is usually called "superscription." There are two trends to deal with prophetic superscriptions. One is to maintain the evangelical stance which takes the superscription as the work of the prophet. The other is to pursue the view that prophetic superscriptions are not of the prophets, but of the editorial hands. In case of the latter, the growth of superscriptions is mentioned, and yet the present superscriptions are considered as given by the editor who was responsible for the final form of prophetical books. The present article will rethink prophetic superscriptions in two aspects. One is the aspect of similarities and diversities among the superscriptions, and the other is the aspect of authenticity. It seems that the similarities are caused by the characteristics of superscriptions as a literary form, that is, genre. In other words, superscriptions contain basic formal characteristics and compositional elements which identify a statement with so-called "superscription." On the contrary, the diversities among the superscriptions are in line with the fact that the literatures belonging to the same genre share the characteristics of the genre, and yet each reveals its own peculiar features. However, one notices the fact that the diversities stand out far more than the similarities, which makes to hesitate going with the view of a coherent, common editorial work on the superscriptions. Nonetheless, the trend to take the critical stance is based on the fact that superscriptions are written from the third person perspective, that is, the prophet is described in the third person. If, however, the third person perspective description is intentionally taken as objectification device, the possibility of the prophet's composition is not excluded from the outset. The present article reconsider the authenticity of prophetic superscriptions with the presentation of several objectification examples from prophetical books.
