Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem of what is the name of God in Exodus 3:13-15. When Moses asked in v. 13 what God’s name is, vv. 14-15 provides three possible answers for the name: first, ehye asher ehye (v. 14a); second, ehye, which is included in the expression, “Ehye hath sent you” (v. 14b); and finally, “Yahweh” (v. 15). The questions, such as which of these three possibilities is the proper answer for the name of God and how to understand the phrases ehye asher ehye and ehye, have plagued interpreters from the ancient times. This paper intends to show that our text’s difficulties are unnecessarily exaggerated and that these difficulties could dissolve by considering the following three points. First, the reason why Moses asked, “what is your name?” in v. 13 is that he needed to certify whether the God who suddenly appeared after 400 years from the end of Genesis and claimed himself to be “the God of your ancestors” (3:6) was Yahweh, the God which had been known as such in the book of Genesis (cf. v. 15). Second, the phrase ehye asher ehye should be interpreted as “Ehye, because I will be with you,” and not as “I AM WHO I AM,” which has been the mainstream interpretation for a long time. The former interpretation is the only valid one permitted by our Hebrew text. With this interpretation, the narrative flow of vv. 13-15 becomes transparent. Third, God’s real answer to Moses’ question of his name in v. 13 is Yahweh in v. 15, and ehye asher ehye in v. 14a and ehye in v. 14b are merely wordplays in preparation for this true answer.
