Abstract

‘YHWH/God of Hosts(YHWH Sebhaoth)’ is a special name of God in the Old Testament, which emphasizes some character of God of Israel. This Divine name was originated under the influence the tradition Resep, the ugaritic god of life, disease and war, and ugaritic military word ṣbu/akkadian ṣabu. Afterward it is assumed that YHWH Sebhaoth began to be proclaimed as a phrase of the ancient cultic pray or hymn in Shiloh sanctuary or in the warfares of Israel with foreign armies. The war narratives of at the final period of judges and the beginning of monarchy, especially early texts related to David imprinted so as to aware of YHWH/God of Hosts as God of Israelite army. However this study explored and classified the centuries-long usages of the tradition of YHWH/God of Hosts and the list of themes connected with this title of God in the Hebrew Bible. Consequently, it appears that this Divine name has no one fixed idea/meaning. This is because the role of this Divine name transformed variously according to historical background and issues in the texts in which this title was used. And this is because the usage of YHWH Sebhaoth revealed both the military concept and nonmilitary concept and reflected different meanings. However the idea that YHWH/God of Hosts was used arbitrarily is inadequate. Instead it was confirmed that the Divine name was utilized in some liberal way within some specific inclination-contexts and subjects, maximizing forces of YHWH and emphasizing seriousness of His utterance, the words. And meanwhile two concepts of military ability and the concept of Creator combined over time and therefore YHWH of Hosts developed into the metaphoric title called an only Almighty universe ruler/king.
