Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Chronicler depicts Manasseh’s repentance and the theological implications it conveys. First, the Chronicler introduces Manasseh’s repentance, an account absent from the Book of Kings. He also highlights its sincerity and positive outcomes. This depiction reveals that repentance is a path open to everyone. It teaches that even the most wicked sinner can be forgiven through genuine repentance. Such a message was essential for the faith restoration of the post-exilic Judahite community. Next, the Chronicler connects Manasseh’s repentance with the theology of immediate retribution. It shows that Manasseh's repentance led to an immediate reward, and his position was restored. This underscores that repentance was the path to restoration. Therefore, the story of Manasseh gives hope for the future to the post-exilic Judahite community, who longed for the restoration of the Davidic dynasty and dreamed of complete shalom through it, while also inspiring motivation for repentance. Finally, the Chronicler portrays the dramatic reversal brought about by Manasseh’s repentance. The author shows that Manasseh’s repentance transforms him from the most wicked king, Ahaz, into the image of the most godly king, Hezekiah. This reveals that repentance is a path toward renewal. The Chronicler wanted the post-exilic Judahite community to transform into a faithful covenant people centered on the temple. As an example of this, he presents Manasseh, who repented and underwent a dramatic transformation. Through these techniques, the Chronicler vividly portrays Manasseh’s repentance and urges his readers to repent.
