Abstract

The Manasseh narrative is contained in both Kings and Chronicles in the Hebrew Bible, each of which is portrayed according to its theological intention. The author traces the meaning and function of Manasseh’s re- pentance in Chronicles, which does not appear in Kings. While Kings’ de- scription of Manasseh serves to explain the cause of Judah’s fall, Chronicles’ description of him serves to clarify the biblical truth that God forgives even the wickedest sinners if they repent. The Chronicler urges the Yehudite community (the Judahite community in the post-exilic period) to repent, emphasizing that the way to forgiveness and restoration is always open. The Chronicler stresses that through the depiction of Manasseh’s re- pentance, even the wickedest sinners can be forgiven and restored in terms of repentance. Furthermore, he portrays the completion of worship by plac- ing Manasseh’s repentance between each Passover worship in the Hezekiah narrative and the Josiah narrative. In effect, Hezekiah and Josiah are con- nected by the Passover because Hezekiah resumed the Passover worship and Josiah completes and institutionalizes it. In this context, the Chronicler employs Manasseh’s repentance as a final puzzle-piece of the completion of worship. In other words, it presents the blueprint for a complete worship through Manasseh’s repentance to the Yehudite community. As such, the Chronicler emphasizes that the complete worship through repentance is a very important factor in the restoration of the Judahite community in the post-exilic period. Because worship through repentance is the hope for the restoration of Israel and the basis for the rebuilding of their identity as God’s covenant people.
