Abstract
The books of prophets have many symbolic stories including God’s intents, since the prophets must convey God’s message. Therefore, the interpretation of symbolic stories is very important to let the reader of the books of prophets to thoroughly and correctly understand God’s word. This study aims to reveal and to reinterpret the meaning of Hab 2:2, one of these symbolic actions in the books of prophets. The phrase 'למען ירוץ קורא בו' in Hab 2:2 is interpreted by many scholars in various ways. I insist that the phrase has a deeper symbolic meaning rather than a literal meaning. In order to prove my opinion, firstly, I analyze the usage of the verb, ‘to run’ in the Bible, and search arguments of scholars for the phrase and interpretations of various translated versions to be ware of making the same mistakes. Finally, I investigate the literary structure of Hab 2:2 itself and Hab 2:2-4, and confirm the hidden meaning of words with the relationship among various words in this literary unit. This study shows that the narrator was very careful to choose words when he delivers God’s message to the reader, especially in the text of expressing symbolic actions, and that the reader must be as careful as the narrator when trying to understand it. Ultimately this study allows us to comprehend why the runner in Hab 2:2 must run at that time.
