Abstract

This paper explores the redemptive-historical significance of the "blessing of the land" promised in the Abrahamic covenant. Research history reveals that the early church favored allegorical interpretations, while the Reformation and early modern period (16th–18th centuries) emphasized literal readings. Calvin claimed both the literal meaning of the Old Testament along with the spiritual fulfillment in the New Testament, while Owen and Darby argued for future restoration, leading to dispensationalism. In the 19th century, Wellhausen questioned its historicity, while conservative scholars supported it with archaeology. In the 20th century, Albright and Pentecost viewed the land promise historically and futuristically, and Kaiser integrated literal and spiritual interpretations. Research necessity arises from the lack of a unified understanding of the land promise's diverse interpretations (literal, spiritual, dispensational) within a redemptive-historical framework, necessitating clarity in theological debates and missional implications. The research purpose is to trace the redemptive-historical development of the land promise, harmonizing its literal and spiritual meanings, avoiding dispensational bias, and illuminating its organic flow across Scripture. The research methodology adopts a redemptive-historical approach to biblical interpretation, grounded in principles of progressive revelation, Christocentricity, covenantal structure, and typological analysis. It examines the land promise's unfolding from Genesis to Revelation (Israel's history, Christ's fulfillment, new creation), supplemented by archaeological data and theological discourse. The research concludes that the land promise retains historical significance while expanding theologically. Israel's physical land is reinterpreted through Christ into a spiritual and cosmic dimension, culminating in the new creation. This approach avoids the extremes of replacement theology and dispensationalism, emphasizing a missional calling (blessing all nations). Believers anticipate its eschatological fulfillment in faith, pointing to God's kingdom. The study reaffirms Scripture's redemptive-historical unity and the missional significance of land theology.
