Abstract

The purpose of this study is to argue that the narrator of 1 Samuel 16 emphasizes the sovereign choice and providence of God throughout the entire process of David’s anointing as king and his entry into the royal court by depicting David as a passive character. First, in the process where God identifies the future king from among the sons of Jesse and sends the prophet Samuel to anoint him, the narrator of 1 Samuel 16 deliberately delays revealing David’s name. Through this delay, the narrator intentionally weakens David’s presence as an individual while highlighting God’s sovereign choice. Second, the narrator records absolutely no direct speech or inner description of David. Although direct speech constitutes a significant portion of the narrative in 1 Samuel 16, the intentional omission of the voice and inner world of David is a deliberate technique to portray him as a passive character. This serves to emphasize God’s will relatively over David’s intention or will. Third, the narrator rarely depicts David as the subject of action, instead portraying him as the object of other characters’ commands or actions. David is chosen by God, summoned and anointed by Samuel, and receives the Spirit of God. Furthermore, he enters the court at Saul's command, is appointed as his armor-bearer, and plays the lyre for Saul, consistently being depicted as a passive character. In conclusion, the narrator of 1 Samuel 16 effectively emphasizes and reveals God’s sovereign choice and providence through this passive characterization of David.
