생성형 AI 디자인의 예술적 잠재력과 방향: 벤야민의 매체미학을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper investigates the artistic potential of designs using Generative Artificial Intelligence(AI) based on Walter Benjamin's media theory. Generative AI lowers the barriers to creativity, enables diverse experimentation, and facilitates non-experts implement their own ideas easily. However, negative views on the artistic value of the generative AI design exist bacause it depends on totally uncontrollable creative processes and large-scale datesets. In contrast to these views, this paper argues for artistic legitimacy of the generative AI design based on Benjamin's media theory. According to Benjamin, art has become more accessible to the public and has taken on a social role with the advent of mass reproduction technology as the second technology. Similarly, generative AI can enhance public play spaces, prevent traumatic experiences, and serve as a social tool. In addition, generative AI has the potential to surpass the limitations of second technology by realizing emergence value, which is linked to the concept of meme that creates cultural order. Consequently, creative activities using generative AI have artistic legitimacy within Benjamin's media aesthetics and can offer new directions for the creative field. Generative AI designs can become a new form of art by serving as a means of emergence.
