Abstract

This study examines Baekje’s invasion of Silla’s northern border in the mid-7th century, carried out in alliance with Goguryeo and the Mohe(Malgal), with particular focus on its strategic background and the scope of territorial advancement. By analyzing Samguk Sagi and other domestic and foreign historical sources, this paper argues that the 655 account of the seizure of 33 fortresses was not an isolated military operation but part of a prolonged strategic offensive that had begun in the late 640s. Baekje engaged in intense military confrontations with Silla along the western banks of the Nakdong River throughout the 640s and, in response to changing geopolitical conditions, shifted its offensive toward the Sangju region. In the latter half of the decade, Baekje expanded its attacks toward the Jiksan, Anseong, and Pyeongtaek areas, leading to sustained localized warfare. Starting with the 649 battles at Seokto Fortress and Dosal Fortress, Baekje advanced toward the Jincheon-Cheongju area by 654, aiming to cut off Silla’s inland transportation routes connecting Cheongju, Jincheon, and Icheon, which led to the lower Han River. Simultaneously, Goguryeo and the Mohe launched coordinated attacks in Silla’s northeastern and coastal regions, such as the East Sea and Bukhan River areas, effectively applying pressure on Silla’s military and logistical infrastructure. In 655, Baekje also attacked Jocheon Fortress(Dobicheon Fortress), attempting to sever the Chupungnyeong Pass route linking Geumsan, Yeongdong, and Okcheon-further heightening strategic pressure on Silla’s interior. The 33-fortress campaign, therefore, should be understood as a large-scale, multi-directional military operation conducted by the Goguryeo–Baekje–Mohe alliance, targeting Silla’s critical transport routes and strongholds, especially those leading to the lower Han River. From Silla’s perspective, the invaded area was described as its "northern frontier". Notably, the Samguk Sagi Geography section and the records from the period surrounding Baekje’s fall in 660 suggest that Baekje had temporarily occupied the Cheongju region following its advances between the late 640s and 654. Ultimately, this study highlights Baekje’s role as an active and adaptive strategic actor even on the eve of its fall. Baekje continuously redirected its offensive efforts and sought to control key transportation corridors, indicating a proactive and calculated military posture rather than a purely defensive one.
