Abstract

The article reviews the institutional foundation on which the North Korean women's sports could have expanded and grown through the North Korean sports policy based on the ideological characteristics of socialist sports. Beginning as a means to train soviet people, the Soviet physical culture introduced the concept of physical culture to train the strong body in which the people could serve in labor and defense. The socialist bloc has started to train professional athletes on a state-led basis to win international competitions, including the Olympics, which became a proxy for the divided political system, and led to the strengthening of professional sports policies. North Korean women's sports also adopted the basic structure of socialist sports. In particular, North Korea, which has drawn competition from South Korea in all aspects, has also been an area in which sports should be enhanced. In order to improve the labor productivity of the North Korean people, the government has actively promoted policies to promote public sports at schools and works while training professional athletes to compete in international matches. In this context, the North Korean sports which is combined with the genderless characteristics of socialist sports, expanded opportunities for women to participate in sports and formed the institutional basis for fostering excellent female athletes discovered through popular sports. The North Korean goal of building a sports powerful nation since the 1970s and the expansion of official women's events in international games such as the Olympics have been factors to strengthen women's sports. The North Korean government supports primarily winnable games. As a result women's sports was able to develop and play an outstanding game in international competitions, unlike capitalist sports that support is determined by popular popularity and interest.
