Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between the Buddhist monk Ennin, who visited Tang Dynasty China in the 9th Century from Japan, and Silla residents in Tang and analyzes the travel journal The Record of a Pilgrimage to China in Search of the Law written by Ennin to serve as foundational research for developing history education contents to foster a positive image of international students in Korean society. The analysis asks whether the support continuously given by Silla residents to Ennin should be understood as one-sided “charity,” and shows that the relationship was a “reciprocal” relationship operating within the context of maritime trade in East Asia as well as a “reciprocal” emotional relationship grounded in the Buddhist faith. By highlighting this historical relationship, we can devise history education contents to assuage feelings of unfairness in Korea toward international students derived from feelings of unfairness related to seemingly charitable polices.
