Abstract

This study explores the lives of elderly Korean-Chinese (Joseonjok) migrants in South Korea to identify effective policy directions for this aging population. Using a generic qualitative research approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight individuals aged 60 and older. The findings show that participants relied on co-ethnic networks during migration and settlement, with daily lives centered in Korean-Chinese communities. In later life, they developed dual retirement strategies between China and South Korea, making cross-border decisions to enhance well-being. These patterns reflect transnational survival strategies shaped by fluid identities and sustained mobility. The study calls for more inclusive social security systems, institutionalized leisure programs for elderly migrants, and the development of policy and statistical research that better address the realities of aging in transnational contexts.
