Abstract
Dark tourism refers to visiting historic sites where tragic events have occurred and learning lessons from them. Jeju April 3rd Uprising and Massacre which happened around 70 years ago in Jeju island, South Korea is an incident where the largest number of civilians were killed apart from the Korean War. Before the Special Act on Discovering the Truth of the Jeju April 3rd Incident and Restoring the Victims' Honor was enacted in 2000, remembering Jeju April 3rd was a threat to life for Jeju people. State violence should not be forgotten because decades have passed since its occurrence. It is important to take a cultural approach to effectively raise awareness on this tragic history to not repeat the same mistake. Dark tourism can be an effective tool for this. This article will review the concept of dark tourism and analyze Jeju April 3rd Uprising and Massacre from the perspective of peace and human rights for educational use.
