Abstract
This study analyzes the motivations and perception types of students admitted through the special admission process for employed individuals to examine the impact of policy and institutional changes in higher education on education beneficiaries. Employed university students are characterized by the need to balance their academic pursuits with professional goals, yet research on this group remains relatively scarce. This study utilized Q methodology, which allows for the objective measurement of individual subjectivity, to classify the diverse motivations and perceptions of employed university students. The results identified four distinct types. Type 1, the "Knowledge Seekers for Career Transition," is characterized by a focus on acquiring specialized knowledge and earning degrees to achieve professional growth and transition to new careers, emphasizing practical outcomes. Type 2, the "Pursuers of Life Vitality Through Self-Realization," prioritizes personal satisfaction and individual growth, pursuing changes in life through academic and university experiences. Type 3, the "Degree Seekers for Social Recognition," sets goals around obtaining degrees and external success, driven by the desire for social recognition and enhanced competitiveness. Type 4, the "Practical Knowledge Seekers for Job Competency," emphasizes the enhancement of job-related skills and tangible rewards, showing a preference for practice-oriented learning. Based on an analysis of the characteristics and distinctions of each type, the findings suggest practical policy measures to support the academic success and career development of employed students. These include providing customized educational programs tailored to different motivational types, creating flexible learning environments such as online courses, strengthening practice-oriented curricula, and expanding counseling and psychological support services to address academic stress. This study highlights the necessity and effectiveness of special admission programs for employed individuals in the context of a changing occupational environment. It contributes to a better understanding of the evolving social and professional needs of employed students and offers directions for developing more tailored educational strategies.
