Abstract
This paper aims to explore the formation and characteristics of the anti-Japanese spirit, focusing on “Gyeok Jeong Si Dae”. The anti-Japanese spirit depicted in the novel defines Japan and the Japanese as evil, and Joseon and its people as good, while framing the resentment and actions against Japan as "anti-Japanese." In other words, it adopts a dichotomous thinking strategy as a cognitive approach, which serves as the foundation for the anti-Japanese struggle and strengthens the fight against the Japanese. The anti-Japanese spirit thus formed is concretized as an "(the)emerging culture" that opposes the "(the)dominant culture" of Japan and the Japanese, through what Raymond Williams refers to as "structures of feeling." At this point, Koreans, including workers and people with disabilities, form solidarity and grow their power by uniting more marginalized groups, acquiring a sense of vulnerability, and confronting the Japanese Empire. The vulnerability, in planning a culture "other" than the dominant culture, acquires contemporary significance.
