Radiation processing is to treat materials and products with radiation or ionizingenergy to change their physical and chemical characteristics for the purpose of enhancing theirusefulness and value. Accelerated electrons, X-rays emitted by energetic electrons, and gammarays emitted by radioactive nuclides are possible as energy sources. Irradiation processes providesignificant advantages in comparison to typical thermal and chemical processes in terms ofhigher throughput rates, reduced energy consumption, more precise control over the process andthe production of products with superior qualities. The crosslinking of the insulation jacketingon wire and cable by electron beam (EB) is one of the most useful industrial applications of EBprocessing. The crosslinking prevents insulated polymers from dripping off an over-heated wirewhen exposed to the high heat of an automotive engine, a short circuitor or even a fire. Thispaper outlines the basic principles of radiation crosslinking, and factors that affect radiationcrosslinking, for example; polymer structure, temperature, plasticizer, functional monomers, fillers and antioxidants. The quality of modified polymer depends not only on the dose level butalso on the dose distribution, which becomes a problem when circular objects like wire and cableare treated. The radiation treatment system to provide homogeneous dose distribution of suitablelevel for all sizes and dimensions of wires and cables was covered in this article.
