초록
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is used as a raw material in variousindustries around the world. The IAEA identify the zircon handling industry as a major NORM handlingindustry. Since the domestic zircon handling industry handles raw materials in the form of powder, thereis a possibility that industrial workers inhale dust containing NORM in the process of performing work. Therefore, as part of the radiological safety assessment for workers in the domestic zircon handlingindustry, the internal dose due to inhale the NORM must be assessed. The purpose of this study is toassess the internal dose due to inhale the NORM for workers in the domestic zircon handling industrybased on the measured particle properties. To achieve the purpose of the study, the major processesof the industry were first selected, and the working environment was investigated to analyze theexposure scenario of worker. In addition, based on the analysis results of major processes and workingenvironments for each industry, the radioactivity concentration of materials and particle properties ofdust in major processes were analyzed. Based on the finally analyzed working environment and particleproperties, the internal dose for workers in the zircon handling industry was assessed. The internaldose for workers in the refractory, casting frame, and glaze manufacturing industries, which arerepresentative of the zircon industry in Korea, was 1.83×10-4~8.19×10-3 mSv y-1. Thorium was foundto be the major nuclide with the highest dose contribution in the domestic zircon handling industry. Andthe main influencing factors of the internal dose due to particle inhalation were derived as radioactivityconcentration, particulate concentration, particle size, and working time. The internal dose for workers ineach industry was different depending on the type of work, working environment, and handling materials. The internal dose for workers in the domestic zircon handling industry was found to be less than 1 mSvy-1, which is the annual dose limit for the public stipulated by the domestic Nuclear Safety Act. The resultsof this study are expected to be used as basic data for identifying the exposure status of workers in thedomestic NORM handling industry and developing effective safety management measures.
