초록
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is widely utilized as a raw material in variousindustrial sectors, undergoing physical and chemical processes. During these operations, radionuclides naturallypresent in materials become concentrated, resulting in by-products such as scale and phosphogypsum with elevatedlevels of radioactivity. In Korea, landfill disposal is the primary method prescribed for managing such by-products. However, radionuclides present in landfilled materials may migrate through soil and groundwater, potentiallycausing radiological impacts on nearby populations. This study aims to develop a methodology and procedures forradiological environmental impact assessment for industries handling NORM in Korea. The research consists of threemain stages: selecting assessment tools and determining sites, defining source terms and exposure scenarios, andestablishing dose assessment parameters. Based on domestic and international case studies, the RESRAD-OFFSITEcomputational code was selected as the primary dose assessment tool. A methodology for site characterizationreflecting Korean environmental conditions was proposed. Source terms were identified as radionuclides containedin NORM, including 238U, 235U, 232Th and 40K. Exposure scenarios appropriate for domestic conditions were designedusing pathways specified in RESRAD-OFFSITE. The dose assessment parameters were determined based ondomestic and international references, incorporating factors such as soil and hydrogeological properties, atmosphericdispersion coefficients, and dietary intake rates tailored to Korean conditions. This study provides a systematicmethodology for assessing the radiological impacts of managing and disposing of NORM by-products. It enablesthe quantification of radiation dose levels in domestic NORM industries and serves as a foundational resource fordeveloping NORM safety management policies in Korea.
