초록
Although essential oil of lavender has many beneficial effects on human health, little is knownabout its pharmacological effects on cancer cells. Here, we performed solid phase microextraction -gas chromatography - mass spectrometry analysis on volatile terpenoids from lavender (Lavandulaangustifolia L.) leaves in response to ionizing radiation and identified δ-3-carene, the only monoterpenehydrocarbon increased by γ-irradiation. When lavender leaves were exposed to γ-ray, relative ratio ofmonoterpene hydrocarbons such as limonene and camphene decreased, but that of δ-3-carene wasup-regulated. In pharmacological test, δ-3-carene had suppressive effect on the growth of lung (A549),prostate (PC3 and LNCaP), colon (SW480), breast (MCF7), and liver human cancer cells (Huh7) with anIC50<150 μg mL-1 for A549, MCF7, PC3, and LNCaP. Together, δ-3-carene, a γ-ray-inducible volatile inlavender leaves, has inhibitory effects on various cancer cells. These results suggest that δ-3-carene canbe a compound of interest as a therapeutic candidate for the study on lung and prostate cancers.
