본 연구는 사우디아라비아의 박물관 정책의 발전과정과 특징을 알아보고 사우디아라비아 박물관에 나타난 국가 정체성을 연구하고자 마스막 박물관(Al Masmak Museum)을 분석 대상으로 설정하고 박물관 전시 내러티브의 구조를 분석하였다. 1932년 건립 이후 사우디아라비아에 현재까지도 남아 있는 부족 정체성과 반 왕정 정체성은 국가 통합을 방해하는 요소로 작용한다. 이러한 상황에서 사우디아라비아는 집단기억 활용해 국민이 국가에 대한 소속감을 느끼도록 유도할 수 있는 역사적 정체성을 형성하고자 했다. 그리고 그 수단의 하나로서 박물관을 활용하였다. 마스막 박물관의 전시 내러티브는 사우디 왕가가 리더십과 이슬람을 통해 아라비아반도를 통일하고 오늘날의 사우디아라비아를 건설하는 대업을 이루었다는 것을 전달하고 있다. 이를 통해 사우디아라비아 국민이 국가에 대한 애국심과 자부심을 품고 특히 사우디 왕가에 대한 집단기억을 통해 충성심을 갖도록 유도하고 있다.
Abstract
This study analyzed the structure of the exhibition narrative, focusing on the Al Masmak Museum, in order to study the national identity shown in the Saudi Arabian museum. The Saudi government has used museums to form a historical identity that can unite people through collective memory and induce them to feel a sense of belonging to the country. The exhibition narrative of the Al Masmak Museum conveys how the Saudi royal family, through their leadership and Islam, unified the Arabian Peninsula and built Saudi Arabia. Through this, the museum encourages Saudi citizens to be patriotic and especially loyal to the Saudi royal family.
