Abstract
Objective: This study identified the combined group types according to the configuration of growth and fixed mindsets among high school students, and examined differences in career maturity and psychological adjustment across the derived latent profiles. Methods: Data from the first-year student survey of the Seoul Student Panel Study 2020 (2nd), targeting first-year students at general high schools, were utilized. The analysis included 3,666 students, consisting of 1,886 male and 1,780 female students. To identify the types based on the combination of growth mindset and fixed mindset, a Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was conducted. In addition, to examine differences in career maturity and psychological adjustment indicators (depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction) across the derived latent profiles, the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed. Results: Five latent profiles were identified and labeled as ‘Growth-Oriented Type’, ‘Mixed-Medium Type’, ‘Growth-Dominant Type’, ‘Fixed-Oriented Type’, and ‘Mixed-Dominant Type’. Results on differences in career maturity across the latent profile types showed significant group differences. The ‘Mixed-Dominant Type’ demonstrated the highest level of career maturity, while the ‘Fixed-Oriented Type’ showed the lowest. Regarding psychological adjustment, the ‘Fixed-Oriented Type’ exhibited generally lower levels of psychological adjustment, whereas the ‘Mixed-Dominant Type’ exhibited higher levels. Conclusions: This study suggests the need for integrated interventions that consider not only a growth mindset but also a fixed mindset in order to support positive career development among adolescents.
