Abstract

This thesis is based on the view that Byun Young-man is not a Chinese composition writer but a distinguished literary man, who wrote his various types of writing in newspapers and magazines, crossing the boundary between Korean and Chinese Literature. Then it focuses on his miscellanies assuming the form of aphorism. Byun Young-man’s aphorisms inclined to vulgar song such as ‘Yuosichunchu(呂氏春秋)’ or ‘Hoinamja(淮南子)’, weren’t brought into the colonial system but maintained a viewpoint as a bystander, and were enlightened by western aphorists like William Blake. His aphorisms is characteristic of analects criticizing the real world and the literature and its criticism can be divided into three categories. First, he criticizes the vulgarity in the cultural behaviors of the educated class in ‘Hakchangsangpyoun(學窓想片)’. Second, he comments on the genuineness of literary pursuit and the essence of literature in his ‘Munyenapjapdam(文藝拉雜談)’ and others. Thirds, in ‘Kwansaengnok(觀生錄)’ he criticizes the humanistic issues at that times, which are death, salvation and ideology he faced. Byun Young-man’s aphorisms are critical miscellanies as well as literary miscellanies and they have a peculiar beauty of writings with that fact. They are significant in literature because their tones are very clear and lucid, his revealing his thought without reserv- ation make these aphorisms reach for ventilation of feeling, and Byun Young-man weave his knowledge and the emotion elaborately in these aphorisms meanwhile create his own style with the dex- terous command of language.
