변영만은 1900년대에 계몽주의자로 출발, 이후 신문학이 발전하는 단계에서 다양한 문학형식을 구사한 인물이었다. 전통과 근대, 동양과 서양을 회통하는 방향의 사상을 가지고 문학을 전개한 사실이 변영만의 문학에서 특기할 사항이다. 이에 상응하여 그는 문체 또한 한문체와 국한문체를 자유롭게 내왕하였다. 본고는 그가 남긴 글들을 모두 수집, 번역하여 변영만전집을 발간한 기념으로 개최한 학술 심포지엄에서 기조 발제문으로 작성한 것이다. 이 논고는 한국문학사 근대의 한 풍경으로서 변영만의 글쓰기 형식과 문학사상을 묘사하는데 초점을 맞추었다.
Abstract
Byeon Yeong-man starts his writing as a enlightenment thinker however, in the development of Korean modern literature, attempts diverse genre. The most meaningful factor of his writing is the mediation of the opposites which is the tradition and the modernity or the East and the West. To correspond this, his style crosses freely between the classical Chinese and Korean-Chinese. This essay is the keynote of the academic symposium which celebrates the publishment of the complete works of Byeon Yeong-man. I review writing style and the literary thoughts of him as a scenery in modern Korean history of literature.
