이 글은 ‘동성애’ ‘동성연애’의 초기 용법 및 이 어휘가 채택되어 쓰인 글들의 의미 맥락, 수사적 특성 등을 살펴보고자 했다. 2장에서는 ‘호모섹슈얼리티’라는 단어가 일본과 한국에서 각각 번역 및 굴절되는 양상을 살폈다. 3장에서는 대중적인 글 속에서 동성(연)애가 의미화되어가는 양상을 살폈다. 연애의 양면적인 이미지는 여성 동성애와 남성 동성애에 따로 할당되었다. 여성 동성애는 신성한 연애의 이미지를 부여받으며 감정과 정신의 영역에 존재하는 것으로 다루어지며 탈성화되고, 남성 동성애는 타파되어야 할 악습의 이미지를 부여받는 동시에 타락한 성욕과 육체의 영역으로 다루어지며 과도하게 ‘성 행위’만이 부각되는 것으로 나타났다. 4장에서는 동성애가 여성적으로 코드화되어가는 메커니즘을 분석해보고자 했다. 여성과 동성애는 생물학적정신분석학적 담론 속에서 ‘열등함’ ‘미성숙함’을 공유 자질로 하여 자연스럽게 만나 탈성화되면서 주류 언어 속에 안착될 수 있었다. 그와 함께 이 영역을 벗어난 관계들, 예컨대 감정의 친밀함이 강조된 남성과 남성의 관계, 혹은 농밀한 스킨쉽을 동반하는 여성과 여성의 관계는 배제되어 가는 것으로 나타났다. 동성애건 이성애건 담론적으로 용납될 수 있기 위해서는, ‘순결’하고 ‘유순’한 여성이미지가 ‘보여지는 대상’으로서 필요했기 때문이다.
Abstract
In Korea, 'Homosexuality' has been translated into 'Dongseong-ae' or 'Dongseong-yeonae' since 1920'. The purpose of this study is to investigate the articles of newspaper or magazine about 'Dongseong-ae' and to consider the meaning and usage of these words in 1920-30'. In Europe, 'Homosexuality' has been used in pathological context, but 'Dongseong-(yeon)ae', the Korean translated word of homosexuality has been more used as a surbodinate word of 'Yeonae' than a name of a disease. On the one hand 'Yeonae' was comprehended as the romantic love and the other hand as the dirty corporal pleasure. These two conflicting meanings of 'Yeonae' was separated when the 'Yeonae' between same sex was descripted. The spiritual feeling and emotion was emphasized on 'Dongseong-ae' between women, while the sexual relationship was emphasized on 'Dongseong-ae' between men. For that reason, only 'Dongseong-ae' between women, not between men, has been discoursed frequently. Chaste and obediant maiden's features are necessary to romantic love stories (regardless of same or opposite sexes) of mass-media, but the story about 'Dongseong-ae' between men didn't contain these images.
