Abstract

This study was conducted to verify the mediating effect of friendship in the influence of self-compassion on the quality of life (QoL) in early-adulthood undergraduate students, the double mediating effect of quality of friendship (QoF) and compassion for others in the identified influence structure of self-compassion was investigated. The data on 144 students from the universities in Seoul are collected on their Korean version of Self-Compassion Scale (K-SCS), Korean version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF), Friendship Quality Questionnaire (FQQ), and Korean version of Compassionate Love Scale Brief Version (CLS-K11). Using the collected data, correlation and regression analyses were performed to test the study hypotheses. The main findings are as follows: first, significant correlations were found among self-compassion, QoL, and QoF. Second, no significant correlation was found between self-compassion and compassion for others, while the latter showed no significant correlation with either QoF or QoL. Third, the mediating effect of QoF in the influence structure of self-compassion and QoL was verified for the first time. Fourth, QoF and compassion for others did not have sequential mediating effects in the influence structure of self-compassion and QoL. The results indicate the possibility of further improvement of the overall QoL as the self-compassion advanced into the friendship with others and as the friendship acted as the mediator to enhance the QoL. The findings are thus significant in having identified a new route by which self-compassion could enhance the QoL.
