Abstract
This study aimed to examine the moderating role of cognitive flexibility in the relationship between depression and stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic and college life adjustment among university students. To this end, a survey was conducted with undergraduate students in the Gyeongnam province, measuring levels of depression, COVID-19-related stress, cognitive flexibility, and college life adjustment. A total of 242 responses were analyzed using SPSS version 27. Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to assess the relationships among the variables, and hierarchical regression analyses were performed to test the moderating effects. The results revealed the following: First, depression, stress, cognitive flexibility, and college life adjustment were significantly correlated. Second, cognitive flexibility did not significantly moderate the relationship between COVID-19-related depression and college life adjustment. However, third, cognitive flexibility significantly moderated the relationship between COVID-19-related stress and college life adjustment. These findings suggest that, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing students’ perceived stress and enhancing their cognitive flexibility may be crucial for promoting successful college life adjustment.
