Abstract
Transition finance has emerged as a critical financial mechanism to support the gradual decarbonization of high-carbon industries and consumption patterns. Despite its growingglobal relevance, the concept remains underdeveloped in Korea, with limited institutional adoption and a notable lack of empirical research, particularly in relation to financial institutions. This study addresses this gap by focusing on domestic credit card companies, which—due to their consumer-centered data infrastructure, digital capabilities, and flexible product design—possess unique potential to function as enablers of transition finance. The research first examines the cases of major global card issuers such as Mastercard, Visa, and American Express, analyzing how they utilize transaction data, ESG-linked rewards, and merchant networks to facilitate behavioral change and support corporate transition efforts. Building on these insights, the study investigates strategies employed by Korean card companies, including Hyundai Card, KB Kookmin Card, and Shinhan Card, which—though not explicitly framed as “transition finance”—demonstrate practical alignment with its core principles. Based on this analysis, the study identifies six strategic functions credit card companies can perform in the transition finance ecosystem: (1) tailored financing for high-carbon behavior shifts, (2) ESG-linked reward systems, (3) small-scale investment facilitation, (4) support for transitioning merchants, (5) policy collaboration through consumption data, and (6) digital tools for personalized transition pathways. These functions position card companies not merely as payment intermediaries, but as potential catalysts for broader financial and behavioral transformation. The study concludes by emphasizing the need to integrate transition finance into long-term corporate strategy and calls for greater institutional and regulatory collaboration to enable credit card companies to participate in building an inclusive, consumer-driven transition finance framework.
