Abstract

Chinese classical encyclopedias(類書) mean books collected encyclopedic materials. Students and bibliographer of Korean chinese classics and classical exegetics have interpreted Chinese classical encyclopedias in a broad sense. however, In this paper, I defined Chinese classical encyclopedias as an encyclopedias to search the origin of matters and literatures(文獻用語事典). I summarized how Chinese classical encyclopedias are adopted in korea. Then I inquired into how korean intellectuals, in pre-modern society, had referred to Chinese classical encyclopedias and had newly compiled those. I divided into nine classes and gave examples with priority given to encyclopedias in the later Joseon Dynasty : ① encyclopedias with priority given to vocabulary ② encyclopedias with priority given to person and anecdotes. ③ encyclopedias on natural history ④ encyclopedias on the Confucian classics and Sung Confucianism ⑤ encyclopedias on history ⑥ encyclopedias included demonstration ⑦ encyclopedias synthesized authentic precedents of state's system. ⑧ encyclopedias intended for practical use. ⑨ encyclopedias for domestic use. ⑩ small-sized encyclopedias for the education of children.
