Abstract
This study explores the characteristics of abnormal motivation crimes and analyzes offenders' decision-making processes and execution patterns through a qualitative case study of the Sil-lim Station and Seo-hyeon Station mass stabbing incidents. The findings indicate that offenders accumulate internal conflicts and grievances before the crime, progressively distort their perception of external environments, and, as social isolation and psychological instability intensify, exhibit heightened aggression. Eventually, a triggering factor induces uncontrollable violent behavior. Key characteristics of the crime execution process include random victim selection, repetitive and systematic attacks, and emotional desensitization. Offenders demonstrate a mixed pattern of premeditated and impulsive attacks in public spaces targeting unspecified victims, maintaining their aggression without emotional fluctuation. Moreover, pre-crime online activities, specific search patterns, and weapon preparation suggest the potential for early warning detection. Following their arrest, offenders rationalized their actions and shifted responsibility to external factors, often associating their violent acts with perceived social oppression or personal victimization. These characteristics provide critical insights for predicting similar future crimes and developing proactive intervention strategies. Based on these findings, this study proposes monitoring online threat posts and establishing early intervention mechanisms, implementing sustained mental health care systems, and strengthening multi-agency cooperation for detecting crisis signals as policy recommendations.
