Abstract
Despite the growing importance of science and technology-based policing in South Korea, there has been a lack of systematic research addressing the technological changes and developmental processes in this field. This study aims to empirically analyze the technological evolution and stage-specific research trends of domestic science and technology-based policing R&D. To this end, we applied SBERT embedding to the research objectives, content, and keywords of science and technology-based policing R&D projects registered in the National Science & Technology Information Service (NTIS) from 2002 to 2024 and identified eight major clusters using K-means clustering. Chi-square test results revealed statistically significant differences in cluster distributions across the preparation, introduction, and growth stages of science and technology-based policing R&D. The analysis of cluster distributions and their evolution showed that science and technology-based policing R&D initially focused on infrastructure development, then expanded to data processing and sensor technologies, and has recently advanced toward AI-based technologies and field-oriented responses during the growth stage. This study contributes to future policymaking and investment strategies in science and technology-based policing by quantitatively identifying the temporal technological changes and research trends in this field.
