초록

The decline of Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent represents a multifaceted historical phenomenon shaped by an interplay of socio-political, religious, and demographic factors. This study critically examines the interconnected dynamics that contributed to this decline, emphasizing the roles of Islamic incursions, religious competition, and shifting demographic patterns. By analyzing historical records, archaeological evidence, and scholarly interpretations, this paper explores the complex processes that redefined the religious landscape of the region. The research highlights how these transformations were not isolated events but rather part of broader socio-cultural and political developments spanning centuries according to the expansion of Islam. This study offers a nuanced understanding of Buddhism's decline and its enduring cultural and spiritual legacies, situating these within the wider historical context of religious and cultural transitions in South Asia. The findings contribute to ongoing academic discourses on religious change and its implications for the cultural evolution of the Indian subcontinent. In conclusion, while the Muslim invasions weren't directly aimed at Buddhism, they, along with political instability and changes in royal patronage, contributed to Buddhism's decline in India. However, Buddhism spread to other parts of Asia, where it thrived, and its cultural and philosophical legacy continues to influence the region.
