Abstract

This article is taking note of the Histoire de l’Église de Corée of Charles Dallet. The background and the time of compilation, and the interaction between Dallet and catholic missionaries of Joseon during the proceedings are reviewed. The process of introduction of the Histoire de l’Église de Corée to Joseon and its translation into Korean is also examined. Dallet who had worked as a missionary in India went back home to France in 1867 because of illness. In the central office of the MEP(les Missions Étrangères de Paris) he came to take charge of the arrangement of documents of Daveluy, a catholic missionary of Joseon. With this work Dallet widened his understanding of the Joseon and the catholic church of Joseon. This also paves the way for him to take over the compilation of the catholic church history of Joseon which had been worked by Daveluy. Dallet started the work on the compilation of the catholic church history of Joseon around the year of 1868, not in 1872 as it is known so far. Dallet worked on the compilation of the catholic church history of Joseon basing on Daveluy’s documents, but without any experience of visit to Joseon he had a difficulty. Therefore Dallet sent a letter to his colleagues, catholic missionaries of Joseon, then he was offered materials and information on the Joseon system and language. With this help of the missionaries he could complete the compilation of the catholic church history of Joseon. The Histoire de l’Église de Corée was published in France in 1874, and the catholic missionaries of Joseon pursued to make its Korean version. At first, they tried to translate the Goryeojujeung, the Chinese version of the Histoire de l’Église de Corée into Korean. But they changed their plan to translate the original book in French into Korean. Missionaries divided up the translation work from around 1885 to early 1900s. The Korean version was not published in a book form but published serially in the magazine, Gyeonghyangjapji. From the compilation work to translation of The Histoire de l’Église de Corée, the entire process was accomplished by French missionaries. The Histoire de l’Église de Corée which had been translated only a part of it was translated in full in Korean in 1981.
