청년세대의 결혼과 출산 인식에 대한 시민성 관점의 접근

Does active citizenship affect young people’s perceptions of marriage and childbirth?

초록

극심한 저출산 현상에 대한 우려가 전 사회적으로 증폭되는 가운데 오히려 소극적으로 변해 가는 청년세대의 결혼과 출산 인식은 어떻게 이해될 수 있는가? 기존 연구들은 개인의 사회·경제적 조건과 가치관이 이들의 가족형성 결정에 영향을 미친다고 밝힌 바 있다. 본 연구는 그러한 요인들 이외에 사회심리적 태도로서 시민성이 결혼과 출산 인식에 미칠 수 있는 영향을 논의하였다. 특히, 시민효능감과 시민주도성으로 대표되는 적극적 시민성이 높을 경우 결혼과 출산 인식이 긍정적일 것으로 상정하였다. 전국 청년 752명을 대상으로 경로분석을 시행한 결과, 시민효능감과 시민주도성은 결혼과 출산 인식에 양(+)의 방향으로 직접 및 간접효과를 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 시민으로서의 효능감을 가지고 적극적으로 행동하는 청년일수록 미래에 자신의 삶이나 사회에서 원하는 변화를 이룰 수 있다는 능동적 태도를 바탕으로 결혼과 출산을 긍정적으로 인식할 수 있음을 시사한다. 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 제도적 환경으로서 청년주류화가 실현될 필요가 있음을 제언한다.

Abstract

In the midst of a severe demographic crisis, how can we understand the young people’s increasingly negative perceptions of marriage and childbearing? The perception and decision to form a family is a complex function of an individual’s socio-economic conditions and individual’s values. However, this study attempts to provide a new interpretation of young people’s perceptions of marriage and childbearing from the perspective of citizenship. Previous studies have demonstrated that passive citizens tend to have a more pessimistic outlook on the future than active citizens. This study assumes a positive relationship between active citizenship and perceptions of marriage and childbearing. Path analysis with 752 young individuals revealed that active citizenship consisting of civic efficacy and citizen initiative exerts both direct and indirect positive effects on the perceptions of marriage and childbearing. The findings indicate that young people who feel empowered and active are more likely to hold positive perceptions of marriage and childbearing based on their political efficacy. Based on the findings, this study proposes the establishment of a youth mainstreaming environment to foster active citizenship among young people.
