Abstract

This study empirically investigates the impact of reasonable accommodations in the workplace on the job retention intentions of Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities, drawing on data from the 2022 Employment Status Survey of Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities conducted by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. Reasonable accommodation is defined as a set of adjustments to the work environment, job tasks, and organizational culture that enable employees with disabilities to participate in employment on an equal footing with their non-disabled peers. The analysis first examined the prevalence and specific forms of reasonable accommodations reported by workers with Psychiatric Disabilities. It then evaluated the relative effects of these experiences—alongside perceived workplace discrimination and awareness of the legal right to accommodation—on their intention to remain in their current employment. Logistic regression results indicated that individuals who had actually received reasonable accommodations were nearly fourteen times more likely to express an intention to retain their jobs compared to those who had not, whereas higher levels of perceived discrimination significantly decreased job retention intentions. By contrast, mere awareness of the right to accommodation did not exert a statistically significant effect. These findings demonstrate that the practical implementation of accommodations, rather than their mere recognition or awareness, plays a critical role in sustaining employment among individuals with mental disabilities. The results highlight the necessity of policies that strengthen the effectiveness of reasonable accommodation systems, actively prevent workplace discrimination, and expand psycho-social and tailored support measures. Such initiatives are essential for promoting employment stability and safeguarding the labor rights of this population.
