초록
This study explores the collocation patterns between focusing adverbs and adverbial clauses through a frequency analysis using the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The investigation specifically narrows its scope to three primary types of adverbial clauses: when-clauses for temporality, because-clauses for causality, and if-clauses for conditions. Focusing adverbs are categorized into two groups: exclusives which emphasize limitation and exclusivity and particularizers which underscore emphasis. The findings reveal that because-clauses exhibit a pronounced preference for exclusives, indicating their tendency to confine the context with limitation and exclusivity. Furthermore, when-clauses and if-clauses tend to collocate predominantly with only in exclusives and especially in particularizers, while because-clauses demonstrate more flexibility by collocating with various focusing adverbs.
