광무대 직영기 토월회 운영 방침과 대중극단으로의 변모 과정 연구

지금까지 토월회에 대한 연구는 주로 신극 극단으로서의 토월회의 특징에 치중되어 있었다. 이러한 연구들에 따르면 토월회는 선구적인 입장에서 조선에 신극의 정착을 주도했고, 그로 인해 토월회는 신극 극단으로서 연구되어야 한다는 당위성이 자연스럽게 기존 연구를 주도했던 것이다. 하지만 이러한 연구 관점은 토월회가 1920년대 중반 이후 대중 친화적 연극를 선보이는 행보를 폄하하는 시선을 이끌어내고 만다. 다시 말해서 토월회가 신극의 영역을 떠나 대중극적 취향을 내보일 때, 토월회의 연극사적 의의 역시 하락하였다고 판단하는 시각을 양산하고 말았다. 본 연구는 이러한 기존 연구 시각에 반대하여, 토월회가 신극 극단의 면모를 벗어나 대중극단으로의 변모를 보이는 시기에 대해 중점적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 시기가 광무대 직영기에 해당한다. 이 시기의 특징을 요약하면, 광무대 직영기 토월회는 대중극단의 공연 전략을 적극적으로 수용하고, 관객 친화적 레퍼토리를 개발하는 일련의 운영 방식을 선보였다는 변화를 선보였다. 이러한 변화는 신극과 대중극의 경계에 선 토월회의 특징을 요약하고 있다.
Abstract
Until now research on Towolhoe has mainly focused on the characteristics of Towolhoe as a Shingeug theater company. According to these studies, Towolhoe led the establishment of Shingeug in Joseon from a pioneering standpoint, and as a result the justification that Towolhoe should be studied as a Shingeug theater company naturally led existing research. However, this research perspective leads to disparaging views of Towolhoe's efforts to present public-friendly plays since the mid-1920s. In other words, when Towolhoe left the category of Shingeug and showed a pro-popular theater taste, a view was created that judged that Towolhoe's significance in theater history had also declined. This study departs from this existing research perspective and focuses on the period in which Towolhoe changed from a Shingeug theater company to a popular theater company. This period corresponds to the period of direct administration of Gwangmudae. To summarize the characteristics of this period, Towolhoe, which was directly managed by Gwangmudae, actively accepted the performance strategies of popular theater companies and introduced a series of operating methods to develop audience-friendly repertoire. These changes well summarize the characteristics of Towolhoe, which is located on the border between Shingeug and popular theater.
