Abstract
This paper analyzes and investigates the architecture of the Great Stupa at Borobudur temple in Indonesia and the sculptures decorated therein based on the contents of “Gandavyuha‐Sutra” of “Avataṃsaka‐Sutra”, focusing on the iconography features of the “Illustrations of Sudhana's Pilgrimage for the Dharma”. the Great Stupa at Borobudur temple was built during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty (775‐850), at this time, Huayan and esoteric iconographies were already introduced from India along with Hindu art, and Buddhism art and architecture, influenced by the Gandara Gupta style, were the most active. The structure of this Great Stupa consisted of nine Mandalas (Vajradhātu Mandala) in the structure of square and circle or five Buddhas. In particular, on the panel of 406 planes of the Great Stupa, there are a large number of scenes of “the journey of seeking Buddhistic truth in Search of Kalyanamitra of Sudhana,” which combines pure land thought and Huayan system iconography, and it is a very important data for examining the relationship between the iconography of “Gandavyuha‐Sutra” and the sutra, as it is the oldest in the production period. The relief of Hindu art and Buddhist art in central Java shows a unique development after the Gandara and Gupta periods and has a tendency of changes. In particular, the transformation of sutra in the process of establishment or dissemination has a relationship with the characteristics of the period or region, on which various ideas are based. Java's unique figures, landscapes and architectural styles of the time continue the genealogy. While the pictorial composition that places hierarchical differences in the size and perspective of the characters is emphasized, in the temporal and ideological natural arrangement of space, many unique elements of Indonesia can be found. The composition of 110 capitals (都城), 110 Kalyanamitra, engraved on the Borobudur relief, basically has its origins in the Sanskrit. This is interpreted as a unique spatial concept exclusive to Java people, and it could be estimated that it was visually expressed by repeating 53 Kalyanamitra's counterattack twice. As above, the relief of “Gandavyuha‐Sutra” at Borobudur temple, Indonesia, can be said to be a masterpiece of Buddhist formative art both historically and artistically. Java, Indonesia, where this sculpture is located, played a pivotal role in the exchange of Buddhism culture as a transportation hub connecting India and Southeast Asia in the past. However, it is true that Indonesia became an Islam country and has been distant from Buddhism, and that research on this has also been neglected. With this research as an opportunity, it is expected that research on this will become more active, and that it will fill the void in the studies of Buddhist art in Southeast Asia that has been vacated so far.
