Abstract

Based on the data from the International Social Survey Programme and Unification Perception Surveys of South Koreans and North Korean refugees, this article compares the national identities of the following four groups: native South Koreans, North Korean refugees living in South Korea, East Germans and West Germans. Furthermore, we analyze the relationship between Koreans’ national identities and their attitudes towards Korean reunification. Our findings are as follows: First, Koreans have a higher proportion of the mixed type, which emphasizes both ethnic and civic factors, compared with Germans. Second, North Korean refugees have less civic and more ethnic factors than South Koreans. Third, East Germans’ national identity converges to that of West Germans over time. Finally, a stronger civic factor is associated with more positive attitudes towards reunification while an ethnic factor does not demonstrate such association.
