Abstract
Studies on American slavery system and racial relations has been discussed in history alongside other diverse academic disciplines. Yet previous studies has mainly focused on the relationship between white slaveowners and black slaves even though American Native Indians had been directly interconnected with slave system and the Civil War. In fact, insufficient historical materials about the effect of slavery system on Native American societies might be a reason, yet there is a more important reason. Previously, scholars have either regarded the slavery system of Native Indians as a replica of southern slavery or generalized some historical experiences of one tribe as a model of the whole Indian tribes. Based on these problems, focusing on the 5 civilized tribes, this study try to explore the extremely diverse and complex relations among American Native Indian, Black slaves, and White. In other words, it will pay more attention of the questions such as what was the slavery system to Native Indians?; how did Indian’s racial consciousness toward black slaves differ from the one of whites’s or how similar?; why did white America break out a solidarity between native Indians and black slaves using the “Divide and Rule” strategy?; and how did this racial control technique affect on the process of racial consciousness of native Indian societies? In addition, it will explain the meaning of the Civil War for native Indians in the Indian Reservation, and the process of adjustments or conflicts between native Indians and black freedmen after the Civil War.
