Abstract

This study examines the Japanese translation of Samgang Haengsildo (三綱行實圖), a state-sponsored Confucian moral guidebook from Joseon Korea, by Asai Ryōi (浅井了意, ?–1691), a Jōdo Shinshū monk and kanazōshi writer during the Edo period. Asai Ryōi's translation emphasizes the “sincere mindset (心ざし)” in the virtuous deeds of filial sons (孝子), loyal retainers (忠臣), and chaste women (烈女), while repeatedly highlighting the Japanese sentiment of “aware (哀れ),” a profound emotional response to these acts. The study argues that Asai Ryōi's focus on “sincere mindset” aligns with core teachings of Jōdo Shinshū, particularly the emphasis on wholehearted faith in Amida Buddha and the practice of nenbutsu as pathways to salvation. Similarly, the concept of “aware,” rooted in the Buddhist worldview of impermanence (mujō, 無常) and compassion (jihi, 慈悲), reflects Buddhist values while resonating with Japan’s cultural aesthetics. Rather than overtly promoting religious beliefs, Asai Ryōi reinterpreted Samganghaengsildo by emphasizing universal moral values embedded in the text. This approach reflects his broader goal of public enlightenment and moral education. This study situates Samgang Haengsildo within the broader context of East Asian cultural exchange, focusing on how Asai Ryōi adapted the text for Japanese audiences in alignment with his Jōdo Shinshū background. By analyzing the reinterpretation and adaptation processes, this study highlights Samgang Haengsildo as a pivotal text in the transmission of narrative traditions across medieval East Asia.
